Urban Forestry in Norwalk

With the passage of a Tree Ordinance by the Common Council on June 11, 2002 urban forestry in Norwalk entered a new era.  The policy previously in  place that offered guidelines to the Public Works Department has now been enhanced by the city ordinance that governs the maintenance of public trees.

State Statutes specific to the responsibilities of the Tree Warden are not affected by the ordinance.

The Tree Ordinance includes the establishment of a Tree Advisory Committee.  The five members that are nominated by the mayor and voted in by the Common Council will offer advise and suggestions to the departments and organizations of the city that are instrumental in ensuring the health of our urban forest.  The Tree Warden (Director of Public Works) serves as an ex officio non-voting member. The committee meets monthly at 6 PM on the 4th Tuesday of each month in Room 101 at Norwalk City Hall (125 East Avenue).

The members of the nonprofit Norwalk Tree Alliance (NTA) have been strong supporters of actions by the city that will strengthen the urban forestry program in Norwalk.  The NTA will continue its collaborative efforts with the city as the directions of the six divisions of urban forestry (Inventory, Site location and Planting, Maintenance, Emergency Work and Storm Damage, Memorial Trees, Historic Trees) are better defined.
